The longer version
Open play solves the problem of a player who wants to play but does not have three friends free at 19:00. The club sells a spot in a session rather than a court, then fills courts from the list of people who turned up.
Sessions are usually grouped by a skill band so that games are competitive. Rotation formats vary: some clubs run round-robins, others rotate winners up and losers down between courts.
